    MUFASA'S  STORY

I opened my eyes for the first time; I was in a warm, dark place that smelled really awful...

A rough voice somewhere above me slurred the question, "Wanna see what I've got?"  An even rougher hand fumbled into my temporary bed (a coat pocket), lifted my tiny body, and I was suddenly in very bright light surrounded by giants.

The attendees of the Capitol Burger "afternoon coffee club" that day gathered around the old wino who was holding me and said I was cute; one of them took me from those rough hands and held me, gently stroking my tiny head.  The light of the afternoon sun was so bright on my just-opened eyes.  I didn't understand as the giant beings talked about "rescuing" me; I just knew I didn't want to go back to that rough, dirty hand, back into that dark place that smelled so bad.

Finally the gentlest of the coffee-drinking giants cupped my tiny body in his hands and told the others he would find a home for me.  After a short walk we went inside a humongous brown house.  Inside, the house was frighteningly large; and there were so many large spaces!  My new friend carried me through several spaces, then stopped and placed me gently on some little rocks in a plastic box.  The tiny rocks were inviting, and my new friend seemed very pleased when I immediatly relieved myself.

Then he disappeared!   I cried for him ... where was he?  My little mew seemed to work; he came back, bringing with him a wonderful brown box lined with a clean soft towel, and a tiny bowl of milk.  He put them both on the floor not too far away from that plastic tub with little rocks he called a litter box.  My new friend told me I was a "good little kitty" as I hungrily lapped the milk; then he gently put me in the box-bed and he disappeared again!

My little mew didn't bring my friend back this time, so I got out of the box and tried to find him.  Everything was so big; I was all alone -- and I was terrified.  There seemed to be no end of those spaces (I later learned were rooms), as I ran on my tiny legs from one new place to another.  I felt another presence but I didn't see anyone.  That's when I decided I'd better leave a trail so I could find my way back.  My gentle giant friend found me again, as I was "leaving my mark."  I was so happy to see him, and I didn't understand why he was not pleased!  He told me "NO!" (???).

After we both repeated the above actions a couple of times, my friend carried me, a special small litter box, my bed, and some warm milk up some stairs, to a place he called an attic.  He said I should feel "safe" there.  There were no separate rooms, but the open space was just as big as the divided downstairs, and when my new friend left again I did not feel safe, so I sprayed trails to follow -- to be sure I could find my way back to my bed.  My friend returned later and once again was not pleased when he saw my "trails."

After a couple of days another giant appeared in the house; my gentle giant friend called her "Mom."  She said if I was going to stay in her house we first had to go to a "vet."  I liked going to the vet; Dr. Ken Jones was SO gentle and loving as he examined me.  His wife's voice, however, was NOT loving as she responded to my new mom's questions about my spraying behavior.  She understood my terror about the huge spaces, and ordered my mom to make some changes!  When we got home, my mom took me to a tiny room where she fixed a very soft, warm bed, and a small litter box.  I felt safe there; my tiny body wasn't totally lost in an unreasonably huge house, with unreasonably huge rooms!
